Rationale for Objective #1

The learning experience that I chose to meet the requirements for Objective #1 is the immersion experience assignment from Social Work with Special Populations, SOCW 333.  After the completion of the assignment, I felt more confident that I could apply culturally competent evidence-based practice skills that are adaptable to meet the needs of individuals and groups with diverse backgrounds that I may work with in my career as a generalist social worker.  The multi-cultural knowledge and communication skills that I gained were the result of research, working with my team member, Linda Howerton, conducting a personal interview with a person who is HIV positive, and attending three educational classes at East Ridge High School conducted by William Adams, an area educator of HIV/AIDS for Chattanooga Cares.

The immersion experience equipped me by giving me the tools to research a population that I knew very little about.  Once I became more knowledgeable, however, it became easier for me to be comfortable interviewing someone who was HIV positive.  I eventually became more comfortable being in the presence of an HIV positive individual at an educational program that I later attended.  I believe that when I become working as a generalist social worker, I will have the same results if I take the time to learn about different cultures and apply that knowledge to the clients that I will be working with in an effort to better understand how their life is lived on a daily basis as a member of that particular group.

As a result of the immersion experience, I gained multi-cultural sensitive communication skills that will help to make my future clients feel more understood, respected, and treated with dignity that is congruent with the National Association of Social Workers’ Code of Ethics.
