Rationale for Objective #3
I chose the book report of How to Manage Conflict by W. Hendricks to fulfill Objective #3 which is to demonstrate professional behavior congruent with the social work Code of Ethics and apply strategies to effectively identify, address, and resolve ethical conflicts in professional practice.
The book was intriguing to me because it explained the various ways that people handle conflict according to their personality styles. It was especially liberating to learn that there are no wrong ways to handle conflict because each personality type has positive and negative aspects. It was not a surprise to learn that I am an obliging individual, but I did learn some new strengths I possess that will benefit me in the future as conflicts arise.
Another important principle to remember for anyone when faced with conflict is that it is much easier to resolve issues in Stage 1 when matters are merely irritations than it is to wait until hostility is present in Stage 3. Unfortunately, conflicts cannot be avoided because we are human, but they can be resolved in a professional manner.
Another assigment that I chose to demonstrate objective #3 is the professional integrated paper that demonstates my understaning of the core values of NASW Code of Ethics.
