Rationale for Objective #8

To demonstrate my knowledge of Objective #8, on how to "apply appropriate strategies for analyzing, formulating, influencing, and advocating for desired changes at all levels of government, and demonstrate a committment to the principles of social and economic justice," I chose to include a resource that I received when I attended the 2007 Social Justice Retreat in Nashville, TN, on April 2-3, 2007.  The Tennessee Disability Coalition was one of the sponsors for the retreat and actively advocates for the disabled population in Tennessee.

I have an interest in the Tennessee Disability Coalition because my field practicum includes my working with any disabled person between the ages of 18-59 who live in Hamilton County and have been abused either physically, financially, psychologically, or sexually.  My job involves linking services in the community that can relieve the trauma of victimization in an effort to assist the client in returning to a life of normalcy.

Other services provided by Partnership for Families, Children and Adults for VOCA (Victims of Crimes) including those people who are disabled and meet the above requirements are:  crisis intervention/emergency services; comprehensive assessment; referrals of appropriate community assistance; advocacy and intervention on the victim's behalf; assistance in applying for criminal injuries compensation; court-related services; and support services.

I have chosen to include an interview that was completed addressing social injustice in the Chattanooga area.  Interviewed was an individual who openly discussed how he believed his economic human rights were violated.  The information was later utilized in the first ever Chattanooga Human Rights Truth Commission.
